Terrestrial isopods play an important role in many tropical and temperate ecosystems by aiding in the decomposition of plant material through mechanical and chemical means, and by enhancing the activity of microbes.

Pill bugs are just one of the many thousand species of isopods which play a huge roll in in bio active vivarium’s by helping with the following.

Aerating the soil:

As the Isopods move around they land up tunneling and creating voids in the soil. Which allows air to fill inside further down the substrate. This in turns allows for better plant growth and prevention of water clogging.

Consumes waste:

Isopods did not get their nickname “Clean up crew” for nothing. They assist in cleaning enclosures by eating all the decaying matter in the enclosure. This in turn breaks down the matter and disperses the organic waste across the soil for plants to eat.

Assist with Mite control:

While they do not eat eggs from reptiles or larger animals they will easily go for tiny eggs that are laid by mites.
