Sometimes referred to as “The Kandy Parachute Spider”, Poecilotheria smithi is a breathtaking specie which is said to be critically endangered in nature due to deforestation making sustainable captive breeding projects ever more so important. Yellow Backed Ornamental Tarantulas like all in their genus , have amazing patterns and colorations . Their fully arboreal nature make them great inhabitants for planted terrariums especially as adults as they hardly choose to hide . Highly saught after for their rarity , fast growth rates , colorations , great feeding response and their strikingly beautiful patterns . A great addition for the more experienced tarantula keepers. They are native to the Forest of Sri Lanka , In the wild, Poecilotheria smithi construct webbed retreats in tree hollows and crevices. It thrives in warm, humid environments with dense vegetation, where it remains hidden during the day and emerges at night to hunt. To properly house this species in captivity, a tall, well-ventilated enclosure with plenty of vertical climbing surfaces is required. Cork bark slabs, artificial plants, and wooden structures will allow the tarantula to establish a secure retreat. Humidity should be maintained at moderate levels, with occasional misting to ensure hydration while keeping the enclosure well-ventilated to prevent mold and stagnant air. A small water dish should also be provided. Due to the speed and unpredictable nature of these animals, handling is not recommended. A fast growing specie , females can live for a decade after maturing, while the males can make it to 4 years+ . A must have rarity for any experienced keeper !!
