Description

Glossostigma elatinoides, commonly known as Glosso, is one of the most popular and recognizable foreground carpeting plants in the aquarium hobby. Valued for its small, bright green leaves and low, creeping growth habit, this freshwater plant creates a lush, dense carpet that gives aquascapes a clean, professional appearance.

Native to Australia and New Zealand, Glossostigma elatinoides requires moderate to high lighting to grow horizontally and form a tight carpet. Under lower light, it tends to grow upward instead of spreading. While it can survive without CO₂ injection, CO₂ supplementation and regular fertilization are strongly recommended for best results, faster growth, and compact leaf development.

This plant roots quickly into nutrient-rich substrate and spreads by sending out runners, making it ideal for covering open foreground areas in nature-style, Iwagumi, and high-tech aquascapes. Occasional trimming helps maintain an even carpet and encourages lateral growth. Stable water parameters and good flow are essential to prevent algae from settling on its small leaves.

Glossostigma elatinoides is suitable for tropical community aquariums and shrimp tanks, where it provides shelter and grazing areas. Though considered moderate to high difficulty, the visual payoff is substantial, making it a favorite among experienced aquascapers aiming for a vibrant, professional-looking planted aquarium.
