Description
Cryptocoryne parva is the smallest species in the Cryptocoryne genus and is highly valued for its compact size and natural grass-like appearance. This freshwater aquarium plant features narrow, bright to deep green leaves that form dense, low-growing clusters, making it an excellent foreground plant for planted aquariums and aquascapes.
Native to Sri Lanka, Cryptocoryne parva is a true aquatic plant that grows fully submerged and is well suited to low to moderate lighting. While it does not require CO₂ injection, supplemental CO₂ and nutrient-rich substrate will significantly improve growth speed and density. Compared to other Cryptocoryne species, parva grows very slowly, but once established, it forms a stable, long-lasting carpet with minimal maintenance.
This plant prefers stable water parameters and may experience the typical “crypt melt” when first introduced to a new aquarium; however, it usually recovers and produces healthy new growth once adapted. Cryptocoryne parva thrives in tropical community aquariums and is compatible with shrimp and small fish. Its low height makes it ideal for aquascapes where scale, perspective, and open space are important.
Commonly used in nature-style, Iwagumi, and minimalist layouts, Cryptocoryne parva provides a subtle, natural foreground that does not overpower other plants or hardscape. With patience and proper care, it becomes a refined and elegant carpeting plant for aquarists seeking a natural look without frequent trimming.
